Adoption Application

Adoption Process

The Rogers's Rescues adoption process is very thorough because we want to make sure the adoption is the best match for YOU and the DOG. Our five step process exists to ensure that we understand your lifestyle and can determine the best match for your home and family. We want to reduce the likelihood of a dog being returned to the rescue since it is very stressful on the dog and the adoptive family.

The following five steps are included in our adoption process:

Step 1: The Adoption Application
The adoption process begins with the adoption application. Anyone wishing to adopt from Rogers' Rescues must first complete the entire online adoption application form. Incomplete applications will not be processed. It is also important to note the instructions regarding the submission of personal references and vetting information (if you have a current pet)--your application will be stalled if the Rogers' adoption team does not receive this required information. Upon receipt of references and the vetting information (if required), your application will be processed and you will hear from a member of the Rogers' adoption team within five days. If you have not heard from us within two days (and you have confirmation your references were sent), please contact us at rogers_rescues@yahoo.com for a status update.

We recognize how excited potential adopters get at the prospect of adopting a dog, and we will make every effort to expedite the process. However, we do ask that you take into consideration that every member of the Rogers' Rescues organization is a volunteer and many of us work full time and have families. Our rescue work is done in the evenings or on the weekends. The Rogers' adoption team processes every application received and will notify you if you application is approved or denied. And please remember--in order to speed up the process, make sure to have your personal references and vetting information sent in ASAP!

Step 2: The Phone Interview
Once your application has been reviewed and references have been received, a member of the Rogers' Rescues interview team will contact you either by email or phone to schedule a time for a phone interview. The phone interview is not an interrogation--is a personal conversation with one of our volunteers to find out more information about you and your lifestyle that is not detailed the adoption application.

Step 3: The Home Visit
Before an applicant is approved to adopt through Rogers' Rescues, a home visit must first be completed. This step is vital and necessary in the application process as it verifies that the residential information declared on the application is accurate. It is also important in identifying potential problem areas that the adopter may encounter when bringing the new dog into the home, e.g., holes in the fence where the dog might escape, toys the dog might chew, etc. The home visit is NOT a white glove inspection of a home.

In addition, it also gives the adopter a chance to meet a Rogers' Rescues volunteer in person and allows the adopter to ask more detailed, specific questions about the rescue and our experiences handling our fosters.

Step 4: Meeting the Dog
This step MAY occur at the same time the home visit is done if the home visit is completed by the volunteer who is fostering the dog. If the home visit is not completed by the volunteer fostering the dog, the foster home will be in touch with the potential adopter after the home visit is completed. You may have also had contact with the foster home prior to the home visit completion.

Sometimes meeting the dog can occur at an adoption event or day, especially if the adopter is interested in meeting several dogs before making a decision. If you have other animals in your home, an adoption cannot take place until the foster dog has met the other animals in the house.

Step 5: Finalizing the Adoption
After you have completed the application, the interview, the home visit, and met the potential dog, you will be presented with an adoption contract, complete with a copy of the dog's vetting records. Our adoption fee is $250 and is NONREFUNDABLE. If you are adoption a puppy under six months of age, you will need to sign a spay/neuter agreement and place a $50 deposit. Once you have spayed/neutered your dog, mail or fax a copy of your receipt and you will be refunded your $50 deposit. If you are adopting a dog that is older than seven years, the adoption fee is $100.

Once you have completed the adoption (or even before arriving to finalize the adoption) please make sure to have an ID tag made for the dog. In the event that the dog is lost, people will know to contact you. It has happened that dog's have escaped the same day as adoption, so providing this identification is essential in safely recovering your newly adopted dog.
